Keeping Kids Safe One Seat at a Time

Ethan, 10 years old, has cerebral palsy. As is common for cerebral palsy patients, he needed hip surgery because of hip dislocation. Cerebral palsy patients suffer from hip joint deformities that can cause hip displacement, and it often occurs throughout the early years of development due to spasticity.

Ethan's family was confident in how the surgery would go and about his care during the healing process. What they weren't prepared for was how they would get him home or transport him while in a cast following the surgery. It turns out he would need to be in a spica cast, a cast that begins at the chest and extends down to cover the legs, for eight weeks. The cast would prevent him from sitting in a traditional car seat or being buckled into a traditional seat belt. He needed a special vest, a vest they didn't own and one they couldn't afford. Thanks to the Kohl's Keeping Kids Safe program at Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach, the Donovan family was able to bring their son home.
